GCC Review of Assessment Calendar

As part of our Strategic Planning process, we plan to review the current assessment calendar to determine stakeholders’ views of the assessment load undertaken by our students. Next week we will be surveying parents and students for their feedback. Once this information is collated we will have a whole staff discussion at our meeting on Friday 2 June.

GCC Parents Council School Uniform Bank & Book Bank – Collection Point

Over the last number of years, in preparation for the return to school in late August, our GCC Parents Council has organised a school uniform bank during the month of June. We are once again seeking donations from parents of unwanted uniform items which are in good condition. These uniform items will be offered for sale to parents with all proceeds going to our Parents Council fund. Please note that from next Monday 22 May a collection point for school uniforms will be available during normal school hours outside the main school office. We are grateful to our Parents Council for offering this choice to parents at what is a very expensive time of year. Details of the date and time of the uniform bank sale will be shared with parents next week.

This year as well as collecting uniform items, the school is hoping that parents will donate a number of novels that have come off the prescribed curriculum list in the last few years which we are looking to collect, recycle and re-use as part of our reading initiative next year. The title of the books we are looking for are as follows:

  • The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
  • When the Sky Falls by Phil Earle
  • Once by Morris Gleitzman
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell
  • Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman
  • Stone Cold by Robert Swindells
  • Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Parents are again invited to leave the books at the collection point outside the main school office.

Transition Year (TY) Graduation Ceremony

Our TY Graduation Ceremony will take place in school on Monday 29 May at 12pm. Following the ceremony, students will finish for the Summer and will be available for collection from school at  approximately 1pm.

Transition Year (TY) 2023-2024

Parents are asked to note that we will be notifying the students next week that have been enrolled in TY for the 2023/2024 academic year.

We will also be sending parents of successful applicants the withdrawal from Religious Education [RE] request link.  Glanmire Community College is a multi-denominational school and is open to all students regardless of their commitment to any particular religion or worldview. Religious Education is provided as a core subject and follows the Religious Education specification developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA). It is important for parents to note that the school’s ability to facilitate friendship pairs in TY is impacted by any decision to withdraw from RE.
