Dear Parents,
BT Young Scientist competition 2023
Congratulations to TY students Robert O Halloran, Aoife O Donoghue and Toby Tangney whose projects have qualified for entry into the BT young Scientist competition for 2023. Robert and Aoife are working on a Social and Behavioral Sciences project, entitled ‘An investigation into attitudes and awareness towards pain-medication in 15-19 years’. Toby is developing a sustainable calculator, which is a barcode scanning app, that scores products, based on their sustainable impacts, which will help consumers make better informed choices, when buying products. To qualify for the competition is an excellent achievement and we are immensely proud of our students. We wish both groups good luck with their efforts in the coming months in preparation for this exciting and prestigious event.
GCC unveils a specially commissioned plaque to recognise participation in Gaisce – The President’s Award
GCC has unveiled a plaque this week marking 35 years of Gaisce – The President’s Award and acknowledging the schools’ fierce commitment to supporting local young people with self-development through engagement with the Gaisce Award. Gaisce –The President’s Award is a self-development program for all young people living in Ireland aged 14 –25, proven to enhance confidence and wellbeing through participation in personal, physical and community challenges. It is a direct challenge from the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, to young people to dream big and realize their potential. Here in GCC we have had students participating in this award at all levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold for the past 20 years and we are delighted to be able to support our wonderful participants on their Gaisce journey.
GCC Annual Mass of Remembrance
The GCC annual Mass of Remembrance will take place in the multi-purpose room (B26) next Friday 11 November at 1pm. We remember and pray for all the staff and students of GCC who have passed away. All are welcome to attend.
Signing Students Out of School
Since the beginning of the school year, GCC has been operating designated times for students to be signed out for medical or other appointments. This process was agreed upon with our Parents Council before the Summer in an effort to reduce the number of partial days of absence for students over the course of the school year. We are grateful for the considered efforts of parents in minimising disruption to the school day.
We are pleased to inform you that this new system has resulted in a 50% decrease in the number of students leaving school on a daily basis. We are very happy with this positive trend and we continue to ask parents to adhere to the sign-out windows. We ask parents and students to ensure that appointments such as GP visits, physio etc. are made outside of school times. In the most exceptional circumstances, where appointments cannot be changed or where a student is very sick, please consult with your child’s Class Teacher or Year Head to make alternative arrangements.
As with all our processes in the school, we committed to seek feedback from stakeholders on your experience of the sign-out system. Please complete the following short survey, details of which will be considered as we plan our next steps:
