15th November 2018
As you are aware we have an upcoming Pupil/Parent/Teacher meeting for 6th Year students on Wednesday 28th November from 4pm to 6.45pm. Back in late September we informed you that new Data Protection Legislation has been introduced across the EU which governs how organisations process personal data.
In the past the schools communicated with parents/guardians in relation to all of its students, regardless of their age. The current position is that a school’s legal basis for such communications ceases when the student reaches the age of 18 years. In law, students 18 years of age or older are adults and we are required to treat you as such when processing your personal data. This means that we can no longer share any of your personal data with your Parents or Guardians once you turn 18 without your written consent.
In September we asked students who are 18 years of age and over to return, if they so wished, Data Protection Student Consent Forms on which you the student could provide your consent to the sharing of your personal data with parents, guardians or any third-party nominee.
If you are 18 years of age or over, in the absence of a consent form, the school can only deal directly with you the student. Parents (of students who are 18 years of age and over) cannot be contacted regarding attendance, results or any other element of your schooling that involves personal data. Furthermore, in the absence of a consent form your Parents or Guardians will not be permitted to attend our Pupil/Parent/Teacher meeting for 6th Years on Wednesday November 28th. Parents will also be denied access to your personal data on VS Ware.
We are now giving students who are 18 years of age or over one final opportunity, if you so wish, to return these consent forms. Data Protection Student Consent Forms (for students of 18 years of age or over) will be distributed to the relevant students on Thursday, November 15th. If you the student choose to provide consent to a named parent, guardian or any third-party nominee, the form must be returned to the class teacher by you the student at tutorial on Friday 16th November 2018. If you the student choose not to avail of this option, the school cannot disclose any of your personal data to your Parents, Guardians or any other third party.
Please note that as written consent must be given, there will be no facility to change this arrangement on the day of the Pupil/Parent/Teacher meeting.
