15th November 2018
Dear Parent & Guardians,
As you are aware we have an upcoming Pupil/Parent/Teacher meeting for 6th Year students on Wednesday 28th November from 4pm to 6.45pm. Back in late September we informed you that new Data Protection Legislation has been introduced across the EU which governs how organisations process personal data.
In the past the schools communicated with parents/guardians in relation to all of its students, regardless of their age. The current position is that a school’s legal basis for such communications ceases when the student reaches the age of 18 years. In law, these students are adults and we are required to treat them as such when processing their personal data. This means that we can no longer share any of your son or daughter’s personal data with you, once they turn 18 without their written consent.
In September we asked students who are 18 years of age and over to return, if they so wished, Data Protection Student Consent Forms on which they could provide their consent to the sharing of their personal data with parents, guardians or any third-party nominee.
In the absence of a consent form the school can only deal directly with students who are 18 years and over. Parents (of students who are 18 years of age and over) cannot be contacted regarding attendance, results or any other element of the student’s schooling that involves personal data. Furthermore, in the absence of a consent form parents will not be permitted to attend our Pupil/Parent/Teacher meeting for 6th Years on Wednesday November 28th. Parents will also be denied access to the student’s personal data on VS Ware.
We are now giving students who are 18 years of age or over one final opportunity, if they so wish, to return these consent forms. Data Protection Student Consent Forms (for students of 18 years of age or over) will be distributed to the relevant students on Thursday, November 15th. If the student chooses to provide consent to a named parent, guardian or any third-party nominee the form must be returned to the class teacher by the student at tutorial on Friday 16th November 2018. If a student does not avail of this option, the school cannot disclose any of his/her personal data to you or to anyone else.
Please note that as written consent must be given, there will be no facility to change this arrangement on the day of the Pupil/Parent/Teacher meeting.
