Dear Parents,

GCC Young Environmentalist National Winner 2023

Congratulations to GCC 4th Year students Aisling O Sullivan, Adam Hayes, Toby Tangney and Ciara Worley who this afternoon were crowned Young Environmentalist National Winners 2023. Having already won the Senior Water Award, the students then claimed the ultimate overall prize. We would like to express our gratitude to GCC teacher Noreen Emerson who has supported the students throughout the competition, as well as our appreciation to all in our Green Schools team who continue to promote such a positive environmental programme in GCC. GCC continues to go from strength to strength in this area of critical importance to all in our school, local and national community and we look forward to building on the outstanding work done in the school to date.

GCC Review of Assessment Calendar

As indicated in our update last Friday, we plan to review the current assessment calendar and we want to hear your thoughts on how often our students take assessments. Assessments are important for two reasons. They let the students show what they have learned and they give feedback on what they need to improve. Please click on the link below to complete the survey:

Barnardos & ETB-Schools-NPA webinar Tuesday 30 May
TITLE: Supporting parents to become aware of their own needs and look after their own well being

DESCRIPTION: The aim of this webinar is to support parents to recognise their own self care needs as they navigate their way through life when parenting a teenager.  Adolescence can be a challenging time for both young people and parents. It is the time when teenagers are going through significant developmental changes, are striving to become more independent from their parents and often establish closer connections with friends. This webinar will help parents to recognise the need to take an active role in caring for themselves so that they can adapt to these changes, maintain strong relationships, recover from setbacks and handle challenges and stress.

GCC Parents Council School Uniform Bank & Book Bank – Collection Point

A reminder that a collection point for school uniforms is available during normal school hours outside the main school office. Our GCC Parents Council is seeking donations from parents of unwanted uniform items which are in good condition. These uniform items will be offered for sale to parents in late June [date to be confirmed] with all proceeds going to our Parents Council fund.  We are grateful to our Parents Council for offering this choice to parents at what is a very expensive time of year.

This year as well as collecting uniform items, the school is hoping that parents will donate a number of novels that have come off the prescribed curriculum list in the last few years which we are looking to collect, recycle and re-use as part of our reading initiative next year. The title of the books we are looking for are as follows:

  • The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
  • When the Sky Falls by Phil Earle
  • Once by Morris Gleitzman
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell
  • Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman
  • Stone Cold by Robert Swindells
  • Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Parents are again invited to leave the books at the collection point outside the main school office.

GCC Book Rental Scheme

Glanmire Community College is acutely aware of the substantial costs of schooling for parents and we try to keep costs to a minimum. Our book rental scheme is one way we can help parents substantially reduce their annual costs. The scheme is operated and supported by various groups in the school including the Book Rental Coordinator, the Parents’ Council on behalf of the Board of Management, with assistance from our Senior Management Team, Teachers, SNA staff and students. Please click on the following link for information about the GCC Book Rental Scheme.
