Glanmire Community College Parents Council The Parents Council comprises a group of 21 lively and enthusiastic members who aim to give parents an effective voice in the education of their children and promote better communication and greater participation between parents, students, school management and teachers. The Parents Council also raises funds for various projects over the school year. This year, back in November, two members volunteered to go along to the Glanmire Community College Open Night to inform prospective parents about the aims and activities of the Council and to answer any questions parents might have. In terms of fundraising, each year the Council organises the raffle at the annual school musical and a separate Raffle to raise funds for the school. This year the Council organised a very successful Easter Raffle with the specific goal of providing a Defibrillator for the college which can be used to treat cardiac arrest in an emergency situation. It is a life-saving device because cardiac arrest is a sudden condition that is fatal if not treated within a few minutes. Just recently the prompt use of a defibrillator on a student in Co Cork attending a sports day undoubtedly saved his life. Training in the use of the device will also be provided as part of the package. Parents’ Council members also provided their services to assist in the collection and covering of books in the college’s very impressive book loan scheme where text books are provided by the school for a nominal cost. A tremendous amount of work is done by Ms A Sheehan and her team behind the scenes to ensure a steady supply of good quality books year on year are ready. The Council are happy to help in this work. The Council are also allocating funds to supply a much needed book covering/laminating machine for this work. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Pat Mc Kelvey, Principal, for his support, inclusiveness and willingness to encourage and foster positive relations between all partners in the school. We also salute the students who do us proud and the teachers who generate a hugely positive impact on students in recognising and acknowledging their marvellous strengths and talents.
